On December 23rd, 2013, I experienced the true meaning of love at first sight.
After 22 hours of being in labor with the most excruciating pain I had ever felt in my life, nothing mattered anymore, because she was here. I felt an explosion of warmth in my chest. It was like my heart had been hit by cupid. I had felt love in my life before. I love my husband very much, as well as my parents and brother, but this was different.
The day my daughter was born, was the day I loved someone else more than I loved myself. Her name is Liah.
I vividly remember my doctor say the words: “Here she is.” I couldn’t wait until I could hold her close to me. It felt like it took forever, but it was truly only about a minute until I held her.
My heart beat like a million miles an hour. It was the longest minute of my life.
Once I held her, I inspected her little body for hours… truly for days. I looked at her face and was in awe of her beauty. Her skin was flawless and silky. I would lay her on my chest so I could hear her breathing. I counted her fingers and toes and took pictures of my hand holding hers because I couldn’t believe after 41 weeks she was finally here.
That same day, I also remember how, I looked at my own mother, and realized that I had come out of her! Now bear with me, I have always known that rationally, but the thought of me being a small baby and my mother experiencing love at first sight for me when I was born, just like I felt for my daughter, brought me to tears… happy tears of course. On that day, I became a mother and also it brought me closer to my own mother. I gained a new level of clarity of what the love of a mother for a child is.
I know today, that I would do things for my daughter that I would probably not do for anyone else in my life. I also know I will always love my daughter no matter what she does or who she becomes. The love at first sight that I experienced at her birth, came with unconditional love.
Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate motherhood. So, here’s some tips for all you Mom’s out there:
Remember that you are being celebrated because you love someone, your child, more that you have ever loved yourself, unconditionally.
Look at your children, and remember the day that you met them for the first time, and reminisce of the love at first sight you felt the day they were born.
Do something memorable with your children where you have fun and connect. This can be an activity that you enjoy doing with your children, such as cooking together, going to a fun place to create memories, create a new tradition, or simply having a hugging session.
Give yourself the gift of pampering yourself for all that you do for your children. Get a massage, your nails done, have some quiet time, or read a good book.
Call and spend time with your mother. Share the feeling of joy of being a mother together. Make sure you tell her that you love her. After all, we only have one.
Happy Mother's Day!
